Carbon vs steel spokes: weight, repairs and what to ask
Compare carbon and steel spoke systems, repair requirements and quote questions before choosing a custom road wheelset.
Choose the spoke system with a plan for maintaining the whole wheel. A low weight estimate is useful, but you also need the correct hub interface, replacement spoke and a workshop that can service it. Carbon spokes deserve consideration when a supplier can document the complete system. Steel spokes deserve consideration when your chosen workshop can source and replace the specified model.
The illustration above is a technical diagram of the questions involved. It is not a product photograph or a drawing of a particular CustomWheelset component.
What does the spoke material tell you?
It tells you part of the specification. It does not establish the strength, stiffness or aerodynamic performance of a finished wheel. Rim construction, spoke dimensions, spoke count, hub geometry and assembly also need a defined specification. DT Swiss's spoke calculator takes the rim, hub, spokes and nipples as inputs when calculating length and weight. That is a useful reminder to compare complete builds rather than a material label.
Steel is also a broad description. SAPIM lists CX-Ray within its aero range and describes those spokes as stainless steel. Its range also includes round butted spokes such as Race. An aero spoke can therefore be steel; a bladed appearance does not identify carbon. See SAPIM's spoke range.
Ask for the spoke maker and model, the attachment at each end, and the replacement part number. If the answer only says "carbon" or "aero," the specification needs more work.
Which repair questions matter before buying?
Start with the mechanic who would repair the wheel. Ask whether they service the proposed system and what they need to order a replacement. A steel spoke still needs the correct length, head, thread and nipple. A familiar brand name alone does not guarantee that a shop has the right part in stock.
Carbon systems can have specific procedures. For example, NEWMEN's VONOA truing instructions call for dedicated tools and warn against holding the carbon section. These instructions apply to that NEWMEN system. They are not service instructions for CustomWheelset wheels or permission to use the same procedure on another carbon spoke.
Before approving a build, get answers to these questions:
- What is the exact spoke and nipple specification for the front and rear wheels?
- Can the supplier provide spare spokes, and what lengths does this build require?
- Who can perform truing or replacement near your destination?
- Does a replacement require special tools or work by the original builder?
- What are the repair cost, parts availability and shipping arrangements?
For travel, add the cost and practicality of obtaining parts away from home. A proposed spare kit is useful only if it contains the correct parts and a mechanic can fit them.
How should you compare the weight claims?
Ask for the weight of the finished wheelset in the quoted configuration. Confirm whether it includes rim tape, valves and any other supplied accessories. A material comparison becomes misleading when one number describes bare wheels and another includes accessories.
The catalog currently has separate carbon spoke starting builds and road starting builds. The C40 carbon spoke build and R40 road build are useful examples to put beside each other in the wheelset comparison tool. They use different reference configurations, so the difference between their planning estimates is not a measured saving caused by spoke material.
Keep the scope of the comparison clear: the same intended use, rim requirements, freehub and brake interface first; weight and cost second. There is no CustomWheelset test result in this guide that establishes a stiffness advantage, fatigue advantage or watt saving for either spoke material.
Can you swap steel spokes for carbon later?
Request a new build review before treating that as an upgrade path. The hub and rim attachments, hole counts and spoke lengths must suit the proposed system. The current carbon spoke reference builds list a carbon spoke system hub. A configurable steel spoke road build does not, by itself, establish compatibility with that system.
If you expect to change parts later, ask which replacements the supplier approves for the exact wheel. A written answer is more useful than a general statement that the wheels are customizable.
A practical choice for your quote
For a first custom wheelset, shortlist the build your local workshop can maintain and ask for the full parts list. If low weight is a major goal and you can arrange service for a matched carbon system, include that system as a second quote option. Compare the complete price and maintenance plan with the steel spoke option.
Use the wheelset finder to narrow the riding category, then compare the reference builds. Send your selected models, bike details and service questions with the quote request. Catalog prices, weights and production times are planning estimates. The written quote confirms the components, compatibility and order terms.
